Human Things Fail

Comments are fucked at RMJ's, so my reply to his post about Heavy Falcon:

Meh. Shooting a car in space was a silly billionaire stunt, but I'm not sure there was anything solid about actually getting into Mars orbit. This was a demo of power, not unlike Apollo 6 (launched the same day MLK was shot). Look at that thing...look at that thing go!

Whether Musk's slide rule guys fucked up or not, it's an impressive step.  Wish we'd do this as a nation, as opposed to letting illegal immigrants do it.

As an aside, I take great glee in reading compliance audit reports created by big corporations that contain typos, as well as showing deviations from best practices by big tech companies.  Everybody fucks up.

It was a good Thursday.

Yeah, a demonstration of power; but we did that with Saturn V. And we put people into orbit around the moon with it, every time.

When Musk can put a car into orbit around Mars (or at least crash it there), then I'll be impressed. In the meantime, I don't want to be the first passenger on the first Falcon Heavy aimed at Mars. Not until the unmanned track record improves, anyway.

Celestial mechanics is SO particular!
