A Smidge Of Rationality Returns

Tom Tomorrow:

Indeed, the point of terror is to make us terrified of everything.  Bush and bin Laden certainly have achieved their ends with roughly a third of Americans.

Fortunately the TSA is at least starting to realize that their approach to preventing airborne terrorists from doing bad things doesn't require a complete ban on liquids.  That was probably the most frustrating thing to me about the whole ridiculous measure: even items purchased in the "sterile areas" of an airport were banned.  At least this is a step in the right direction in terms of a specific restriction, but our entire security apparatus needs to reassess it's overall security mandate and policies.  Would that rationality would return in full.

PS--Might as well revisit the concept of moral conflict in this context.  Whether through deliberate purpose or mere incompetence, BushCo has done nothing but play into the terrorists' hands.  Extreme bravado combined with increasingly rigid security measures whilst eroding civil rights and America's traditional moral authority are exactly the wrong thing to "win" this struggle.

What if, though, that's the point? Maybe we've "mis-understimated" BushCo, and they are actually are doing these sorts of things to keep us safe? The idea being that if we act all terrorized, the terrorists have what they want (namely us being terrorized), so they won't actually have to attack us to get us where they want us ... this is not my original idea, it's been tossed around for a bit actually ...

HURRAY!!!! I can go back to planning a flight again! I had become a fervent carry-on only gal (reformed horrific overpacker) in preparation for a planned Paris holiday (someday, hopefully) so that I wouldn't have to lug my tonnage of luggage up the staircases of the 'apartement' in Montmartre or similar that I was going to rent for a week...since many didn't have elevators. I have been carry-on only for three years now, which makes a big diff to me when I get to my beloved New Orleans (my usual every couple of month escape prior to the levees busting all over) or visit my college buddy in San Fran. No dread of the line at baggage claim, get the jump on the taxis or shuttles!
This is the first I have heard of the relaxing of restrictions! Thanks a brazilian NTodd!!!
(am trying to decide on which -for now- photo I would like to purchase from Winding Roads! They are all great!)

Yeah, my sister had her Lip Gloss of Mass Destruction confiscated in the airport as we headed to VT.
