Brain and brain, what is brain?

Oh, don't get me started on the brain-only superstition again. Russell put that aphorism in his grandmother's mouth, as I recall. I think it's a pretty good characterization of dismissive Brit anti-intellectualism. I like Eddington's observation that the only thing we really knew was there was our own consciousness and everything else comes from that fact.

Actually, do get me started on it again.

I heard it as a reductio of empiricism, specifically aimed at Hume, so Russell could have actually heard it from his grandmother. Not unlike the "ghost in the machine" characterization of Cartesianism, which was meant to be a mocking description of Descartes dualism, but became a supposed philosophical claim of its own (so that "Ghost in the Shell" becomes a legitimate pop culture concept, when the original was meant to address the perceived absurdity of the original claim).

So it goes.

(It is fun to hear it in Homer's voice, before he became too cartoonishly simple for such things.)
