Linda Morabito writes:

Mom is an astronomer and her son asks a question of her. But, I thought you said there couldn’t be planets around stars in systems like that?

Mom responds, “Well that was before the light was turned on; in light of new discoveries we have determined there can be planets in orbit around stars systems like that.”

Pretty goddamned cool.

As I noted on FB, Morabito's role in discovering volcanic activity on the Jovian moon of Io during the Voyager program was featured on Cosmos, so I thought this clip from another episode was apt:

I remember watching this--myself a 6th grader like the kids in the show--and just boggling at the idea that we'd be able to prove planets that obviously had to be there were truly really absolutely orbiting other stars.  And it did, as Dr Sagan said, happen in my lifetime (but sadly not in his).

And that's why I fucking love science.

Cool indeed! I rate this system... three stars. <grin_duck_run />

(Did I really say that? yep. Really did.)
