I don't think it is actually as simple as that.

I agree that he was more of proponet of abolition towards the end of his life. However, the slaves that died under his reign, including the ones he promised to set free upon his own death, probably didn't think he was Mr. Abolitionist; why did he chicken out at the Constitutional Convention in 1787?
