The Fuel Tank Is Half Full

Wonder what will happen when gas prices triple:

High gas prices could turn out to be a lifesaver for some drivers. The authors of a new study say gas prices are causing driving declines that could result in a third fewer auto deaths annually, with the most dramatic drop likely to be among teen drivers.

Professors Michael Morrisey of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and David Grabowski of Harvard Medical School said they found that for every 10 percent increase in gas prices there was a 2.3 percent decline in auto deaths. For drivers ages 15 to 17, the decline was 6 percent, and for ages 18 to 21, it was 3.2 percent.

Their study looked at fatalities from 1985 to 2006, when gas prices reached about $2.50 a gallon. With gas now averaging more than $4 a gallon, Morrisey said he expects to see much greater drop — about 1,000 deaths a month.

With annual auto deaths typically ranging from about 38,000 to 40,000 a year, a drop of 12,000 deaths would cut the total by nearly a third, Morrisey said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Not really all that shocking.  I wonder what other benefits we'll accrue from expensive gas and behavior changes...

Very interesting. I've been predicting that bicycle, moped and motorcycle injuries/deaths will go up, but I doubt it will be an even trade. And if you add the health benefits of cycling...

i like walking. far less chance of a cycler-driver altercation. although, drivers encroaching on my personal space in the crosswalks are fair game...

I also prefer walking, especially since I've had 3 bikes stolen. And cars turning right into me when I'm crossing? Next time I'll smack their car with my umbrella.

In walking to the bus stop across the street from work I am nearly run over in the crosswalk everyfuckingday by drivers trying to run the light. I think I should be allowed to shoot these drivers.

Erin, I've hit cars with my bags before. Especially at the stop at home, the cars/trucks turn too sharply and nearly hit anyone in the crosswalk, so I've had to whack them with my tote bag. Really, really, really annoying.

Nice blog, Erin.

I'm sure I'll get plenty of exercise, but how about all the old folks who'll keel over and die from heart attacks or crack their heads slipping on ice while walking miles a grocery store?
