Pink Poseurs

What, they want people to pay them for walking, and do they really think walking will cure breast cancer

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Portland

May 10, 2008
8:00 AM Registration, 9:00 AM Program
Location: Rose Quarter Commons

Together we've raised $96,248.24, and there are still 1 days to go!

American Cancer Society Announces Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Investment Program

With funds raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events across the Great West Division, grants will be available to support the increase of breast cancer screenings among underserved women. These grants support strategies that reduce breast cancer screening disparities and increase breast cancer screening among women.

This is a waste of time and clearly just something that the participants are doing to lord it over the rest of us.  I could tell looking at them in their pink t-shirts with cute team names as they walked by us on the sidewalks today that they were self-righteous frauds.  This is as silly as a bikeathon...

That will never do any good! Activists are so silly.

Are we having dinner when you're in DC?

Of course! I'll wear pink... ;-)

I wouldn't contribute a dime to the cancer "societies." Know what causes breast cancer? Estrogens in plastics (not banned), transfats (not banned), diets high in saturated fat, refined carbohydrates (cleverly marketed, not banned)...and these agencies are the least politically driven on the planet. Oh sure, eventually they'll take "a stand" ...in the meantime they rake in the dough from the epidemic that is cancer, including money from big agro, companies like Monsanto, and the plastics industry. Give me a break.

Lesley: You would be wrong. If you had a sister who's breast cancer is in remission or a young friend whose leukemia has returned, I bet you be out there with your friends walking & walking. You'd probably have some cool tshirts to wear as well, or maybe visors.

Lesley, certainly there are issues with large organizations involved with such causes, and there are causes that our modern "lifestyle" have introduced. It's easy to become cynical about it all. However, treatment and support are also important parts of the equation, and cancer did in fact exist before these other factors. If we want to address estrogrens, trasnfats, etc, it might be up to the constituents of these societies and, of course, representation in Congress to apply the pressure.

Imagine if people wearing those t-shirts started using these events to educate other participants, perhaps even wearing slogans that provided information about the problems you identified. Just one example. Otherwise, where IS your money going and how is it helping? Me, with many dear friends who have survived breast caner, I'm more inclined to support these organizations knowing that they are imperfect vehicles, as are all human endeavors.
