Shaky

Well, I canceled my datacom class tonight because I wasn't feeling well.  Not like spacey or hungry from the fasting, but I was fairly shaky and wondered if maybe I was, ironically, getting a case of food poisoning from the big "kickoff" meal I had last night.  Nope.  Not sure what it was, but I had a little power nap and lounged around and feel much better.  My students still have to finish their midterm anyway, so it's not like they don't have shit to do.

Could be a sudden blood sugar level drop. I get shaky from that.

I was going to say something similar, NTodd. Fasting interspersed with large meals (feast and famine) can send your levels of blood sugar &mdash and other chemicals, like potassium, calcium, and sodium &mdash all over the place. That can make you feel pretty wonky. Don't even bother asking me how I know.

When breaking your fast, start off with a small, light meal, preferably a salad or vegetable soup (no dairy products, protein, little fat).

Ideally, your first meal after a fast of more than one day should be fresh non-starchy fruit, like apples (which are high in pectin and will keep you from pooping your brains out). Your second meal can be fruit plus steamed broccoli or a vege salad or a vegetarian vegetable soup with little to no added fat and salt. Your third meal should be a small piece of broiled fish with a salad or fresh steamed veges, plus fruit if you want. Your fourth meal should be the same as the third, but add a cup of steamed or boiled brown rice.

Your fifth meal can be whatever the hell you normally poison yourself with. Keep the fresh fruit and veges high in your post-fast diet, drink plenty of water, if you're going to drink fruit or vege juice, treat it like a food, not a source of hydration. Small amounts, interspersed with plenty of water. Stay away from dairy products (except small quantities of yoghurt after you're eating normal meals) and fat, which slows down your digestion. Also, you might experience cardiac arrhythmia if you normally eat a lot of salt and protein. Fasting for more than one day changes the calcium-potassium-sodium balance which governs your heartbeat.

I'm only nagging because I care what happens to you, foo.
