Fasting 2.0

Hmm...

People go on fasts for an number of reasons - health, religious holidays like Ramadan or even charity fund raising. Many of us have abstained from sugar, caffeine or carbs from time to time.

But giving up online networking? That's new. And, apparently, really hard.

Kristin Sullivan, 25, is doing just that by giving up Facebook.

A week into her fast, she feels good about it. She's even cutting back the time she spends online in general.

"I have noticed that I am getting more done," she says. "It's refreshing, because you can really get sucked into the whole social networking world, and now my friends have to call me and I call them."

Refraining from online chatting is teaching Kristin the value of real conversations.

"We live such fast-paced lives that it takes away from having more meaningful connections. I would much rather meet for coffee and get face to face time with people, but we try to cram so much in our lives that we end up abbreviating so much of what we do and how we talk to people. I get tired of electronic forms of communication."
...
Kristin says giving up Facebook for 40 days seems like it's going to be easy. Now that she's actually talking to her friends more, the only thing she really misses is the online photo albums. In the end, she hopes her internet cutback will stick.

I can't do this right now.  Addicted to Scrabble.

[taps vein]

Speaking of fasting, I'm starting up again this afternoon and going to Monday.  More deets later, which I know everybody's awaiting with bated breath...

I did it for two weeks, ending 10 February, in solidarity with a friend who had to go to a 14 day rehab with no computers. It was tough, and every time I walked near my computer, I had to resist. And now that I'm back, I'm back with a vengeance! I spent 3 hours mingling in the crack den last night -- but... but... there was an eclipse to talk about (I stepped out every 15 minutes or so in the 5 degree wind chill to check on it) and... and... a McCain scandal to snark about!! I think if I want to avoid the three-hour binges, I might have to quit cold turkey. It may be all the bad things critics say about it, but for me, a single mom who can't very easily or often get out to be with grown-ups, chatting online is sanity.

P.S. Yes, I await details on your fasting, not with bated breath (whatever that means), but baited breath: pear-cranberry scone breath...

Bated, baited. It's all good. What can I say, NTodd. You're a mensch. Me, I just can't give up food. Sex, sure. Travel, entertainment, trips outside my room, sure. I guess that's the test of one's moral fortitude, giving up something that really hurts. I'll be rootin' for ya.

Giving... up... Facebook?
Feeling woozy. Must sit down.
Good luck to her. Me, I'm going to continue my losing to you streak at Scrabble.

I've always assumed "bated" is a corruption of "abated." IOW, you're holding your breath waiting for something.

In my case, I await your details with Bates's breath...

If I gave up my online life, I'd give up about 90 percent of my human contact. Forget that!
