Our suspicion is they were doing this as a training exercise. They had at one point 11 officers (including plainclothes), but it was 4 newbies who ran our IDs. When asked what rule we violated, they couldn't answer, though they indicated that we had been "spotted" putting up signs. We were detained for 45 minutes--released for a few minutes, then re-detained as they kept telling us a witness would be coming to positively ID us.
In the meantime, I blogged, and Des and Liz made phonecalls to the lawyers and other people, just in case.
