No More Cannon Fodder
The next action by the ad hoc anti-war group that has been upping the ante of late will be tomorrow (Friday) at 3:00 p.m. at the military recruiting center in Williston (166 Sycamore Street – near the box store hell zone). This action has been in the works for weeks and was the brainchild of about a dozen Mt. Mansfield High School (MMHS) students who are both opposed to the war and fed up with the continued presence of military recruiters at their school. Interestingly, the last Vermonter killed in the Iraq war was a MMHS graduate. The message of the rally is “out of our schools, out of Iraq.” The group had been planning to make the action a bit of a surprise but military recruiters somehow got wind of it and – yesterday — let the MMHS students know that they knew about it. So the surprise is over but the action will go on as planned. Join us. Support these budding activists. And, better yet, help stop this war and the military’s preying on the youth of this nation to be war fodder.
Well, since I missed the last 2 important events, I'd better get my lazy butt down to Williston. Wonder if I can drag NTodd's Pa along...

PS--That last Vermonter's funeral was picketed by Fred Phelps' crew. Lovely people.

Great story about the high school kids organizing against the recruiters. I live around the corner from one of the best public high schools in Chicago (Whitney Young). I saw a bunch of kids from the school at the peace rally a few months ago in Union Park (2 blocks from us). I wish I knew how I could find out about what other anti-war activities these kids are up to. I don't remember any of the specific faces from the rally, just that there were a bunch of highschoolers with WYHS jackets and shirts there, carrying signs.
I guess I'll just have to wait until I see one of the students with some anti-war sign or t-shirt or button and ask him/her. If I could connect with a student anti-war group, I'd be willing to donate any materials they might need for signs, posters, whatever, and give them space on my webserver. I could even have my 19 year old daughter make the contact so I don't come across as a creepy old perv bothering high school kids. Not that I care, but I don't want to get in the way, just help them out.
Anyway, I like today's podcast, NTodd.
