Hush, Hush, Voices Carry

Why Tuesday?

While two-thirds of Americans are in favor of reforming our election processes, there is a deafening silence in the public sphere about this vitally important issue. So we at Why Tuesday?, out of respect for those who forty years ago fought so hard to open the voting booth to all Americans, are endeavoring to end the silence of good people by calling upon you join us in an important dialogue.

Today, we are launching the Why Tuesday? Candidate Challenge. We are asking all presidential candidates to answer the following questions in a video response to be posted to YouTube and our website, and, in so doing, to share your views about our voting system with all Americans:

Do you agree that our voting system is broken?

If so, what specific steps would you take in the first year of your presidency to reinistill vigor and confidence in our electoral processes?

Finally, do you believe that Congress should revisit the decision made in 1845 to make “the Tuesday after the first Monday in November,” the one and only day when Americans can chose who will lead this nation?

We ask that all candidates submit their video responses to us by Tuesday, October 30th. On Tuesday, November 6th, 2007 (one year from election day ‘08) we will be running advertisements in newspapers throughout the country recognizing both the candidates who responded to our challenge (regardless of their proposed solutions) and regrettably identifying who were too busy to address an issue that is critical to the well being of our democracy.

Definitely part and parcel with the disempowerment and disenfranchisement so many people feel regarding the war with Iraq (and Iran).
