Perspective

I've been pretty much studiously ignoring the Va Tech shooting, but I have to note that Gonzales' testimony before Congress was pushed back because of it, Bush traveled to VA for a memorial service, and the media has been covering this story non-stop.  Folks are going on and on about "national healing" and acting like this is the worst thing ever (well, since 9/11, anyway).

How many people were killed in Iraq today?

And the day before?

And...?

You're not the only one thinking about that. Keith Olbermann compared the outpouring of national grief for 30 young people pointlessly killed at VT to the lack of an outpouring of national grief for the 30 young people pointlessly killed in Iraq over the previous ten days.

Brian Williams noted in his Dateline special Monday night, while interviewing a VA Tech student, that the number of people killed was pretty shocking....that it wasn't something one gets to report regularly....and that he would certainly be stunned to report a number like that coming out of Iraq.

One wonders if Williams bothers to read his own copy.

You don't have to go to Iraq. The United States averages around 30 gun based homicides a day. Is one person murdering 32 people worse than 30 murdering 30?
