Nit Of Honor

The nitwit:

One American who made the ultimate sacrifice was Marine Corporal Jason Dunham. Two-and-a-half years ago in Iraq, Corporal Dunham gave his life when he threw himself on top of an enemy grenade and absorbed the blast. His selfless act saved the lives of two of his fellow Marines, and earlier this month I announced that our Nation will recognize Corporal Dunham with our highest decoration for valour, the Medal of Honor.

My nit:

The  Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. Generally presented to its recipient by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress, it is often called the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Yeah, yeah, it's stupid, but I got really annoyed when I saw Bush call it the Medal of Honor and not the Congressional Medal of Honor.  It's a colloquial thing, to be sure, but since the award is given in the name of Congress, the omission of that one little word just smacked of more Bushian Unitary Executive Bullshit.  Hell, most of the states seem to use CMoH when talking about their special license plates!

Actually, acting as Commander in Chief and officially bestowing a military honor he should use the proper name for the honor -- which is the Medal of Honor.

I get annoyed when people call it the Congressional Medal of Honor.

I wouldn't call Corporal Dunham a nitwit. Save the vitriol for the guy who deserves it, not the dead Marine.

Yeah, it is the MoH, but there are lots of awards with that in the title. Maybe in the context it's understood, but there is a history and it is bestowed in the name of Congress, who created it. It just felt like Bush was taking credit again when not warranted--the Marine's valor was recognized by other people and Bush is just a conduit who is trying to tie himself to somebody else's noble sacrifice.

For the best in Presidential Unitary Executive Bullshit, go to this web sight. This will show that there was a President that makes George Bush look good by comparison.
