I Split On Your Government

Just the way I like it:

Democrats extended their Senate majority to 23 and added 10 seats to their House majority. Combined with six Progressives and two left-leaning independents, Democrats could command 101 votes in the House in any confrontation with Gov. Jim Douglas.

Democrats dominated across the state, defeating an incumbent GOP state senator and nine incumbent members of the House. They captured an open Senate seat and several open House seats.

Assuming recounts don’t overturn any results, the final breakdown in the House come January will be 93 Democrats, 49 Republicans, six Progressives and two independents. The Democrats take a commanding 23-7 edge to the Senate.

One of the most striking regions of the state for the Democrats was Rutland County. Sen. Wendy Wilton, a first-term Republican, was ousted in the three-member district as Democrat Bill Carris swept into office.

The city of Rutland once was the stronghold of conservative and moderate Democrats, but that ended six years ago in the wake of adoption of the civil unions law for gay and lesbian couples. That was reversed on Tuesday as Democrats ousted two incumbent Republicans in the city, captured an open House seat that previously had been held by the GOP and had one other district where the incumbent Democrat had no opposition.
...
Progressives also lost one of their seats, giving up the Northeast Kingdom seat captured two years ago by Rep. Winston Dowland. But they picked up a seat in Orange County — in the heart of 2000’s anti-civil unions territory — where Susan Davis defeated three-term Rep. Sylvia Kennedy.

Split government, baby: catch the fever!

And it is especially nice to see that as the Civil Unions debate fades into history, those bigots who fought it and rode that teeny wave of "Take Back Vermont" discontent are fading with it.  God did not destroy our sinful state, the law didn't turn us all Teh Gay, and life moves on.  As well it should.
