I Guess This Is The Corner I Keep Hearing We Turned

John Murtha:

[T]here is no question [that the American military is turning against the war]. They’re frustrated. They realize — listen, the plan has changed from weapons of mass destruction to al Qaeda to topple Hussein to stabilize Iraq to democratize Iraq. We need an achievable plan. We don’t have that. The military operates best when it has an achievable plan. These folks are going back in less than a year. There is no question about the hardship on this small proportion of people, and we’re spending $8 billion a month, $11 million an hour.

A winger the other day was chortling about how "only" a couple hundred active-duty military folks had signed a petition telling Congress we need to get out of Iraq.  And now polling data shows many in the armed forces are realizing just how devastating this pointless war is.

Combine that with a majority of American civilians being for "cutting and running", not to mention a vast majority of Iraqis wanting us to leave, and you've got timetabl...er, benchmarks!  I'm sure Bush checked with Barney and Laura before flip-flopping.

We were discussing that 14 year old girl MySpace controversy the other day, and a student of mine who is an Iraq vet said that he knew a bunch of guys who made threats to Bush from the internet tent on his base and just sort of disappeared. I drew two conclusions from this piece of information: (1) the soldiers on the ground are Not Happy, and they blame Bush; and (2) that first level of personnel management is desperate to keep a lid on discontent in the ground forces.
