My Best Submission For A Darwin Award

Meet my friend D's old truck, 'Duke', who is currently in need of a tow out of my woods.

Why yes, I did do well in physics as a young lad.  That's why I know that one really should make sure a vehicle is in gear and the emergency brake is engaged when parking on a downward sloping driveway.  Gravity: it gets me down.

I am happy to report that nobody died nor were there any injuries, save to my pride (well, maybe I tweaked my back a little in the vain attempt to stop Duke after I noticed he was rolling).  Now if you'll excuse me, I need a drink.

What a beautiful lane, though, to be stuck in . . .

OK, OK... HOLD ON JUST A MINNIT, Bubsy...

Ya left out a few juicy and embarassing details...

1. Did you borrow Duke?
2. Were you driving Duke?
3. Was your friend with you?
4. Is Duke just stuck, or is there damage?
(jumping to conclusions)
4. Were you at home when you parked Duke w/o putting on the Parking Brake?
5. Did your friend know you ditched his truck BEFORE you blogged it?

I've had a VERY similar situation, which I'll be happy to relate at my place, if it gets these hard questions answered...

1. Did you borrow Duke?

18 months ago when the battery died in my '96 Outback, right outside D's apartment building. He's been sitting in my garage ever since. Duke, I mean.

2. Were you driving Duke?

No, I was parking Duke, whose battery died over the winter.

3. Was your friend with you?

He was on his way here to pick up Duke, until I called to tell him what happened.

4. Is Duke just stuck, or is there damage?

Just stuck. It was a gentle roll, retarded by overgrown brush.

4. Were you at home when you parked Duke w/o putting on the Parking Brake?

Yup. Walking away from Duke when I heard the crunch of gravel as the tires began to roll.

5. Did your friend know you ditched his truck BEFORE you blogged it?

I called him first. Then immediately blogged it.

I've had a VERY similar situation, which I'll be happy to relate at my place, if it gets these hard questions answered...

Tag, you're it!

I have undying memories of my Dad, when I was a kid, racing down the street -- we lived on a hill -- after the old 54 Ford that was rolling down the hill and about to introduce itself to the neighbors front window.

Halfway down the hill his hat blows off. He stops to pick it up, plops it back on his head, and races on after the car.

Caught the car before it hit the window.

We had a curvy driveway on a hill in Va. with an oak tree at the turn. The carport was at the top. My sister somehow put the Buick Special into neutral, and down it went, hitting the tree and crumpling the trunk.

That poor car; a few years later it went to Guam with us; we had a similar kind of curvy driveway, this time with the carport at the bottom. In order to make it out of the carport and up the hill you had to open the door to see when to turn. I was driving this time, and my foot hit the gas. The driver-side door hit the carport column (solid 18-inch square concrete) and bent it nearly 180 degrees.
