Well, the branches got in the way, but whatever. We think this is a phoebe--any of my birding readers want to weigh in?

SP doesn't care what the bird is--he's just happy to be going on an adventure in a little while. Or maybe he's just happy.
I'm not sure when the Liberal Caravan departs Liberal Mountain, but we'll theoretically be seeing a band in Manhattan tonight and tomorrow is the NYC Atriots picnic in Central Park.

New Yorker joke: Irritated husband looking in a bird book as he addresses his wife: There is no listing for a brown bird that goes 'peep'.
And SP is now in the dictionary under phrase: bundle of joy. What a cutie!

Looked it up in the field guide and believe it is an Eastern Wood Pewee, a bird I have never heard of. Good sighting, todd!

Hey Paul! Good to see you.
You've driven me to Peterson's and there's one thing I think that nails this as a phoebe: it bobbed its tail while I was watching. And now that I'm looking more closely, I also notice the wing bars are less distinct and less white, and there's not really any crest on its head. I s'posed I coulda just asked the bird, but it was busy trying to get away from me!

Glad you were able to confirm the Phoebe sighting especially by the bobbing tail.
This was fun doing the ornithology research. Cheers!

I googled Phoebe images and from the photos that pulled up, I will say it looked the same to me. But then I saw Paul's comment and goodled the photos of Eastern Wood Pewee and it is almost identical - and found this:
* Not safely distinguishable from Western Wood-Pewee by sight, only by song. Western has a harsh, buzzy "peer" instead of the clear whistled song of the Eastern.
* Olive-sided Flycatcher has more indistinct wingbars, and larger and darker patches on the side of the breast that contrast strongly with a white center; also occasionally shows white tufts on the sides of the rump.
* Eastern Phoebe persistently wags its tail, has an all-dark bill, and has only indistinct wingbars or lacks them entirely.
* Distinguished from Empidonax flycatchers by weak, broken eyering and dirty smudging under tail.

Which leaves me with you got a great shot of a bird! :)
