Sunday Critterblogging

I like birds.  There are lots in The Meadow.  Here are two:

A chickadee regarding us warily.

A house wren fiercely defends his territory.

I found a dove's nest in one of my hanging baskets today -- the momma was scared away when I watered, but she came back soon (and I stopped watering instantly). In the meanwhile, I felt terrible, worried that I would have to hatch and fledge them myself. This is the 4th year that doves have nested in my hanging baskets -- you would think I could remember!

Doves have intrinsically poor nests: they just drop a few twigs, and call it a day. They always lay two eggs, about the size of thimbles. It is really fun to watch the babies fledge. And yes, they crap on my steps, but it is worth it.

Regards,

Tengrain

I love how the chickadee looks.

Is Sam interested in the birds.

Milo is an indoor cat, but he cherps at them through the window.

Tengrain - that's wicked cool!

geo - Sam is a Mighty Bird Killer. His speciality this year has been juncos, though he generally finds chickadees to be tasty. I do my best to discourage him, but what can you do?
