Closing The Barn Door

Gen. Michael Hayden told his Senate confirmation hearing that the controversial National Security Agency wiretapping program he helped institute would have caught two 9/11 hijackers in San Diego, California, before they carried out their mission.

And I'm sure the Senate and press will ask the obvious follow-up question: WHY THE HELL DIDN'T BUSH IMPLEMENT SUCH A VITAL PROGRAM WHEN HE TOOK OFFICE?

The outgoing Clinton administration's recommendations about al Qaeda not scary enough?  Richard Clarke's warnings about al Qaeda not scary enough?  The August 6th, 2001 PDB entitled "Bin Laden determined to strike in US" not scary enough?

All we've got here is two choices: either the administration was so incompetent that it let 9/11 happen on its watch, or they're simply fascists trying to justify the unjustifiable.  Wait, that might be the same thing.  Oy.

It also pisses me off that the press is letting them set the terms of this debate - is this program effective at catching terra'ists? Rather than -- is this program fucking legal and/or constitutional?

If it ain't the second then the first doesn't matter.

Why doesn't anyone ask him why he was so short handed with Arabic linguists that the intercept he didn't get on 9/10/2001 saying it was was going to happen, didn't get translated until 9/12?
