A Day Without Boycotts Is Like A Day Without Sunshine
Hundreds of thousands of mostly Hispanic immigrants skipped work and took to the streets Monday, flexing their economic muscle in a nationwide boycott that succeeded in slowing or shutting many farms, factories, markets and restaurants.
From Los Angeles to Chicago, Houston to New Orleans, the "Day Without Immigrants" attracted widespread participation despite divisions among activists over whether a boycott would send the right message to Washington lawmakers considering sweeping immigration reform.
"We are the backbone of what America is, legal or illegal, it doesn't matter," said Melanie Lugo, who was among thousands attending a rally in Denver with her husband and their third-grade daughter. "We butter each other's bread. They need us as much as we need them."
Police estimated 400,000 people marched through Chicago's business district and tens of thousands more rallied in New York and Los Angeles, where police stopped giving estimates at 60,000 as the crowd kept growing.
An estimated 75,000 rallied in Denver, more than 15,000 in Houston and 30,000 more across Florida. Smaller rallies in cities from Pennsylvania and Connecticut to Arizona and South Dakota attracted hundreds not thousands.
Whether you agree with using the boycott tactic at this time or not (ahem), it's damned impressive to see people mobilize. This is a powerful, peaceful method with a long history of influencing government and society, and it certainly has gotten people to take notice.
As the struggle continues, I hope folks working on this issue, resisting the war, etc, also consider the 197 other methods of non-violent action we have in our arsenal...

Here we are in Houston, still waiting for the projected backlash we were warned of. Many employers allowed their immigrant employees (legal or otherwise) a day off to participate. One employer even offered to shuttle employees to the rally; they politely declined. Absent violent newsmaking incidents, I doubt opponents (e.g., Sen. John Cornyn) will be able to make any political grist of it. In Houston at least, this seems to have been an overwhelmingly positive event, and it made the Chronicle newsfront.

Well, Steve, it's not like any backlash would be immediate. I never predicted there would be riots by anti-immigrant folks. Just as the campaign for a more just immigration policy takes time, so would any response.
I just wasn't enamoured with the timing of the tactic. As I said, it is powerful and can be effective. I'm not entirely convinced it was necessary, and means escalation becomes more difficult when the GOP forces the issue later.
