Saturday Spotted Salamanderblogging

Just saw this little critter in the driveway on our nightly walk.

According to eNature:

Spotted salamanders are actually fairly common in Vermont forests, but they're seldom seen because they remain hidden under leaves and logs for about 11 months out of the year. They emerge on only a few warm, rainy nights each spring and migrate to their breeding sites, usually vernal pools.

This is the first I've ever seen one!  Mex paid it absolutely no attention.

That solved a real mystery for me. After a rainfall one early morning I saw what I thought was eyllow-spotted black worm in my garden. I was in the house, on the second floor, and didn't have my contacts in. Now I know what it was. Thanks.

well, maybe if you'd lift up a rock or two.

we used to hunt these things in my youth, but mosty just the the infinitely more boring red striped salamander in maryland.

very cool.

cool.

I wonder why Mex ignored it? Maybe it doesn't move fast enough to catch his attention?

...at least it wasn't white!

geo - the thing wasn't moving, so maybe it was boring. Although it does sort of look like a piece of discarded rubber or something, and Mex loves trash...

flory - oh yeah, Sam would've torment the poor thing, I'm sure.

Is a salamander anything like a gerrymander? Living in Texas, I see gerrymanders pretty often...
