The Clothes Don't Make The Person
There's been a lot of talk about Jill Carroll's wearing a headscarf and other "Muslim-looking" garb in her first interview after being released, with some people (heh) questioning why she chose to dress that way. As I observed earlier, there are plenty of very simple explanations, including necessity (safety reasons, that was all she had during captivity) and cultural sensitivity (when in Rome).
It appears that the great consternation is caused by worry that Carroll's dress is out of some misguided sympathy for the Islamofascists. Why would anybody want to dress like a Muslim woman, afterall?
Somebody in a discussion thread had brought up the notion that Bush himself has acted in certain culturally-appropriate ways when engaging with people with other customs, so I thought I'd provide a visual reminder of that for all the folks desperately analyzing Carroll's fashions.
Wearing a yarmulke at the Wailing Wall.
Kissing and holding hands with Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.
PS--Bush/Abdullah collage from this rather humorous Electablog post.
PPS--If anybody finds other examples, please let me know in comments.

Other end of the scale, the twins wearing massively inappropriate clothing when meeting heads of state, interacting with other cultures; Cheney wearing weird clothing at a funeral.

This reminds of a conversation I had with someone once. He honestly believed that we could win the war on terra by telling Muslim women that they can wear whatever they want to wear. That yes, by telling half of the Muslim world that they had options about their wardrobe choices would make them sympathetic to the West. Never mind that the burka, abaya, and chador are all outer garments like a coat and that Muslim women wear whatever they want under their robes and when they are at a friend's or family member's house they take off the abaya/chador/burka. And it never occurred to him that the women might want to wear these garments.
And yes, he voted for W twice. /eyeroll

Very good post. You've answered some questions for the people who wish to pick at Carroll. After being held captive for that length of time, I would think these people should be happy she made it out alive.

Well, see, covering your head for the Pope is different. He's, like, a Christian.

The Pope is catholic like the bears in the woods as I understand it. And the rabid Ameritaliban would disagree that makes him christian, what with catholics believing in evolution and science and stuff.
