Logic 101 From The AP?
Bush Using Straw-Man Arguments in Speeches:
"Some look at the challenges in Iraq and conclude that the war is lost and not worth another dime or another day," President Bush said recently.
Another time he said, "Some say that if you're Muslim you can't be free."
"There are some really decent people," the president said earlier this year, "who believe that the federal government ought to be the decider of health care ... for all people."
Of course, hardly anyone in mainstream political debate has made such assertions.
When the president starts a sentence with "some say" or offers up what "some in Washington" believe, as he is doing more often these days, a rhetorical retort almost assuredly follows.
The device usually is code for Democrats or other White House opponents. In describing what they advocate, Bush often omits an important nuance or substitutes an extreme stance that bears little resemblance to their actual position.
He typically then says he "strongly disagrees" — conveniently knocking down a straw man of his own making.
Bush routinely is criticized for dressing up events with a too-rosy glow. But experts in political speech say the straw man device, in which the president makes himself appear entirely reasonable by contrast to supposed "critics," is just as problematic.
The "some say" thing is a device I've complained about quite a bit in various venues, and is oft noted, decried, and parodied in the blogosphere. I'm just shocked to read about it in a story in the mainstream press. Another sign that we've reached the tipping point?
And BTW, some say that Bush fucks goats, but I'm sure that rumor is completely unfounded (no, not really a strawman, but fun to type all the same).

Do you have any proof that he hasn't had carnal knowledge with the ovine family of domestic livestock? He lives in West Texas by choice and a common nickname of the locals is "goat roper". If you had his money would you live out in the middle of nothing and no where by choice? The man wears pink embroidered socks, and that's not normal.
I'm not saying there's anything in the rumor, but it is a bit odd.

As usual, Lyndon B. Johnson was way ahead of us all. He liked to tell a story about a sheriff in his home state (hey, what was that state again?) who was being challenged in an election by popular lawman and was looking for campaign tactics. So one adviser says, "Let's put it out that he fucks pigs."
"Aw, come on, Clem, you know that ain't true." [Hmm, already I spot a difference from current political norms. Anway, the guy answers--]
"Yeh, I but I want to hear the bastard deny it."

[blogwhoring] Here's my contribution to the straw man discussion: an homage to the great straw man himself. [/blogwhoring]

The way Bush's numbers are going, I don't think the Goat-Fuckers of America would let him join the club.
