Take My Wife...Please!

Lovely:

The U.S. Army in Iraq has at least twice seized and jailed the wives of suspected insurgents in hopes of "leveraging" their husbands into surrender, U.S. military documents show.

In one case, a secretive task force locked up the young mother of a nursing baby, a U.S. intelligence officer reported. In the case of a second detainee, one American colonel suggested to another that they catch her husband by tacking a note to the family's door telling him "to come get his wife."

The issue of female detentions in Iraq has taken on a higher profile since kidnappers seized American journalist Jill Carroll on Jan. 7 and threatened to kill her unless all Iraqi women detainees are freed.

The U.S. military on Thursday freed five of what it said were 11 women among the 14,000 detainees currently held in the 2 1/2-year-old insurgency. All were accused of "aiding terrorists or planting explosives," but an Iraqi government commission found that evidence was lacking.

Iraqi human rights activist Hind al-Salehi contends that U.S. anti-insurgent units, coming up empty-handed in raids on suspects' houses, have at times detained wives to pressure men into turning themselves in.

But we're the good guys...

Hey. I know you're not at this stage yet, and it's crass as all hell, but, when you're ready, let me know and I'll check around and get you the names of some good lawyers for whatever kind of divorce you're having. I work at a big firm and all it will take is an email to find out who in Vermont is good.

NTodd, I forgot to say I love you, in a platonic way, of course. (But it's better than a sharp stick!)

Someday, I hope to meet you and tell you that in person.

Hang in there, a chara. The wheels turn slowly but grandly, and one day you'll be rewarded with joy.

Look at my wife crosswise, though, and it's straight to Palookaville. Just saying, buster.

Hecate - I will e-mail you. Thanks.

pie - I hope we'll meet, too. EschaCon II?

Thers - you are in serious need of self-reflection, you partisan lout.

NTodd,

I don't know you, but I've appreciated your posts about Saffy, and I really enjoyed the flame-war at Althouse. My father died unexpectedly of a cardiac arrest early in Novemeber. The Althouse-feminist free-for-all was a great distraction and, frankly, a hoot.

So if you need a bloggy-distraction, let me know if there is a right-wing site you want to storm. I'm with you!

Meanwhile - have a virtual eclair, and give Sam and Mex some pets from me.

Sending you good thoughts,
Geoduck2, the partisan shellfish

geo - I'm sorry for your loss, and thank you for your thoughts (and the partisan eclair).

It shouldn't have taken the release of any additional documents to show that our military has been regularly taking hostages in Iraq. It was in the news and discussed on well-read blogs as early as July 2003. By November 2003, it was clear that the detention of family members of wanted Iraqis was a policy.

Sorry, screwed up; the link for 'clear' in the comment above should be this Anthony Shadid story.

Also recommended is Jeanne d'Arc's post against all forms of hostage taking in Iraq.
