Filibuster, You Idiots
As of late Tuesday, the federal appeals court judge had enough vote commitments for confirmation — a simple majority in the 100-member Senate — with 50 Senate Republicans plus Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska publicly saying through their representatives, in interviews with The Associated Press or in news releases that they would vote for him.
If you goddamned Democrats hang together on this, you can block Alito. Do the fucking math: they need more than a simple majority to end debate. You'd think right now if the GOP actually had this sewn up, we'd be hearing about how ALL Republicans had announced their intention to vote to confirm and they wouldn't be threatening to make a filibuster a campaign issue.
Don't fall for those threats again, don't play politics, don't let the bastards put a fascist on our highest court for life. Stay firm and fight, you gutless cowards.

I believe the phrase is "worse than useless".
The judges would also accept "lower than whaleshit".

There's a detailed post on this at Liberal Oasis today.

These idiots should spend more time on the internets. Not only would they get the mood of the 60 + % of the country, they would learn that whenever the Goopers tell you that "if you grow a spine, it will cost you at the next election" it means that it will cost the Goopers at the next election. Louise Slaughter gets it. Always do exactly what the Goopers warn you against doing. Disgusting. Nobody likes a wimp. The relationship isn't as much like a plantation, where as a slave you have a gun to your head, it's more like an abusive marriage or relationship where the abused partner is free to leave but stays of his/her own free will. Maybe someday he/she will just snap and kill his/her abuser. Someday.

I just don't get it. I thought Senate Dems were declining to filibuster because they didn't have the votes. Now that they clearly have the votes, why don't they do the deed? WTF is wrong with them?
If Senate Dems have the power to stop Alito, and they don't do it, I have to ask this: under what conditions will they finally act? Who or what is bad enough to provoke a serious response? <disgusted_snort />

The saddest thing is that there seem to be nobody to vote for the choice being between fashists and sissies...
Posted by: eva | Jan 25, 2006 12:30:50 PM
That is, indeed, the saddest thing, eva - back on topic, the Dems are not going to fillibuster [sic] - from the end of the CNN report:
"The only way Democrats could stop Alito is through the filibuster, a maneuver they show little interest in trying. Thus Democrats are working to get a large opposition vote to score points against President Bush. "I think it sends a message to the American people that this guy is not King George, he's President George," Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada said.

Great message you got there, Dingy Reid - no wonder you guys keep losing elections.

Wow. I agree with (gulp) Charlie.

You're welcome.

Gots ta keep that powder dry, ya know. Otherwise it won't be good for anything when ya need it.
It appears that our Senators are truly in a dither about this situation, knowing that in fact they can torpedo the nomination, but still hearing their consultants whispering in their ear that they "better not" or Chimpy will go medieval on their asses. And that's no joke to them. They know he can and he will if they show the slightest sign of weakness.
If they they show solidartity and strength, however -- something their consultants fear they might -- the Chimp loses, and once he's lost, it is likely he does not recover.
Then what?
From my perspective, the Court does not get a new member until after the 2006 elections, and maybe not even then, if the election is as fraudulent as previous ones have been. The Dems will be savagely attacked by the smear merchants, like nothing we've ever seen before, and there will be no defense to speak of. Americans of all stripes will recognize this as grossly unfair, driving down Republican approval ratings even more than they already have been.
All the Dems have to do is explain, clearly and coherently, why Alito is bad for America. His own words -- about Roe and about power -- and his own decisions -- always in favor of corporate and governmental power despite the facts -- are sufficient explanation.
Will they do it? They haven't been able to so far.
But they are hearing from their constituents like mad. They blew it on the Iraq War Resolution -- when their constituents were innundating them with "vote no" calls. Will they blow it this time?
Maybe not.

BuzzFlash has an excellent essay on this.
In brief it says, if Reid can't get a filibuster going then he should resign his leadership position.
Posted by: Dartanyon | Jan 26, 2006 11:29:23 AM
I wouldn't mind Reid's resignation, Dantanyon - my only concern is that the Dems mind stumble across an effective minority leader.
Che Pasa:
You do realize Alito has ruled against BOTH corporate and governmental power, right?
AP UPDATE:
Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) just announced he will vote for Alito as well.
Posted by: Charlie | Jan 26, 2006 11:53:21 AM
If Sammy is approved, I wonder what the weepy Mrs. Alito will do for an encore? Slit her wrists?

Nice, Dartanyon - remember when the Clintons requested Chelsea be left out of the politics? Never again - your side has burned too many bridges.
Posted by: Charlie | Jan 26, 2006 12:23:31 PM
No, Chuckles, you guys burned the bridges. Chelsea was a freaking child, and you Rush Limbaugh types called her a dog and made fun from the start. Mrs. A's crying was a stunt, as was her overall presence at the hearings--and she's an adult, not a kid.
So fuck you and you faux civility bullshit, you deluded, lying bastard.
Posted by: NTodd | Jan 26, 2006 12:37:36 PM
For the record, I never called Chelsea Clinton a dog, but feel free to curse away nonetheless.
Posted by: Charlie | Jan 26, 2006 12:42:03 PM
I don't give a shit if you didn't. You guys lump us all together, so I'm going to lump all you assholes together. You burned the bridges.
And thanks for your permissions to do what ever the fuck I want to do on my own goddamned blog, you sanctimonious pustule.
Posted by: NTodd | Jan 26, 2006 12:59:17 PM
Bring it on, NTodd. If you will recall, I was addressing Dartanyon directly ABOUT HIS COMMENT and whether he remembered when the Clintons requested Chelsea be left out of the politics?
Posted by: Charlie | Jan 26, 2006 1:02:50 PM
It's my blog and I'll respond to whomever I like. Same goes for banning, beyotch. Buh-bye.
Posted by: NTodd | Jan 26, 2006 1:14:38 PM
Charlie, comparing a then-12 year old girl to a middle-aged woman who had her Oprah moment before 20 million viewers isn't quite the same thing.
For the record, it was none other than the 350lbs. GOP bloviator, Rush "Oxycotin" Limbaugh, who called Chelsea Clinton "the White House dog."
You see Charlie, it was YOUR side who opened the door to groundless, attack politics. From St. Rush's remarks about Chelsea to claims President Clinton had Ron Brown's plane shotdown to smears that Mrs. Clinton is a dyke -- they all began in the diseased, collective mind of the radical, rightwing.
Next?

Did you really ban Charlie?
Good for youm if you did! His filibuster was starting to annoy us all and he didn't even have the votes for it here in this forum.
Posted by: G.Gordon Giddy | Jan 26, 2006 1:36:51 PM
A minor nit, NT: there's only one "l" in "filibuster." You have two in your post title.
Posted by: Michael | Jan 26, 2006 2:42:51 PM
GGG - yup. I held out against the various private and public admonitions for months, but I hold my own counsel. Since he was such a shit about our adopting Mexico, he's been teetering on--gasp!--being uncivil, and lately he's just completely annoyed me.
Michael - thanks. I know how to spell it, honest, though I do often get fooled visually with all the 'i's and 'l's in the mix. Corrected.

I just figured you were furious, and that spilled over into your typing ;-9
Posted by: Michael | Jan 26, 2006 4:07:41 PM
You are a despicable piece of human excrement, Charlie, and if it weren't against my religion I would happily hunt your sorry ass down and stomp it for that callous comment alone. I'll offer the following ancient prayer instead: Exorcizo te, creatura malis, et iubeo tibi statim dehinc abire ac nunquam hic redire, in nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi.

NT--You'll want to do a domain ban on this fucker, not just an IP ban.
