Remember, Remember, The Fifth Of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...

Just got back from the Bonfire Night fireworks. I was hoping they'd burn someone in effigy.
One of my British friends was relieved to learn I was a Democrat. She'd been afraid to say anything, but then she let loose.

It scares me that Guy seems to have a blog, as he's 400 years dead... details at my place... :)

Indeed. I feel the Americans missed a trick by not importing Bonfire Night when they declared independence. Whilst it's more pleasant to be standing out on a July night in order to watch fireworks, there's something agreeably pagan in the northern latitudes at least about fire-worshipping on a winter's night (the placing of Guy Fawkes in effigy on the inferno, even in Britain, being secondary to the fun of lighting an enormous fire).

Great fun had by all at our Guy Fawkes effigy burning here in NJ. Not much of a bonfire, more like hung from a small wood frame and lit up with a blow torch.
So much for anachronism.
My 16 month twins go nuts when I recite the nursery rhyme. It is only a matter of time when they create own effigy and run through town exclaiming, 'Penny for The Guy!'
I have yet to read the V For Vendetta graphic novel (on a waiting list at the library). Very much looking forward to it.
