That's right - the GOP is not afraid of putting this important national issue to a vote. I wonder why the Dems voted against holding the debate and vote?

And here I was thinking our Chuckles had finally OD'd on the Kool-Aid.

Hey - I have a hard time understanding your Quaker connection. It seems like you're very fond of mocking a group of people who you also really respect. I'm one who went to a Quaker college, have had a lot of friends who are Quaker, but have never felt religious enough to become one. When my mother died we had, as I felt she would have wanted, a short Catholic service and a short Quaker service. The more meaningful one for me was the Quaker one. My siblings were climbing the walls. It's jarring to me whenever you make fun of them. If this comes across as judgmental, then I've fucked up. Your stance on the Friends is confusing to me; and yet I firmly and fundamentally believe in the greatness of mockery.

bbbustard, read his bio below the little boy's face on the left. He's a Quaker himself. Kinda like being able to mock oneself but nobody else can. You know how Quakers can get when they are mad.....

And how DID the Quakers get their name? Like the Shakers down the street?

Chuckles - funny how the GOP was only "brave" enough to take a vote after Murtha made a proposal, smearing him as a coward, then rather than debating the merits of his suggestion, put up their own strawman.

bbustard - not only do I respect Quakers, I am one. Lots of people think we're black hat wearing, pious cowards, so I make fun of that.

ellroon - reportedly George Fox, founder of the SoF, was told by a judge to quake before god. So the nickname kinda stuck.

sdf - pozhaluista!

It looks like the Republican "resolution" kind of exploded in their face since anyone who has thoroughly followed the discussion saw what a mockery of the process it was. It's too bad that the GOP didn't have the courage to have a real discussion about the situation but spent the time sending out people like Jean Schmidt to slander a true hero. But that seems to be their only defense.

I rise in defense of NTodd's loving jibes at our shared Quakerism. The Quakers are perhaps the only denomination that enjoy making self-deprecating comments about themselves.

MB, if there's one thing I've learned from Garrison Keillor, it's that Lutherans can be self-deprecating too!

Sorry -I guess I misunderstood thee.I applied the "quasi" to the "quaker" incorrectly. I guess now I have to respect you? Actually, not hard to do.

Posted by: bbbustard | Nov 19, 2005 10:02:57 AM

bbbustard - no worries. The 'quasi' modifies 'anarcho-libertarian', and everything modifies 'Quaker'. And all of that is snark directed at the silly tendency people have to unidimensionally categorize me as 'liberal'.

We Catholics poke fun at ourselves, too. But then we feel guilty about it and have to go to Confession. :9

O.K., then - I know those like Cindy Sheehan wanted an immediate pull out from Iraq, so at least they know who is for and against them now.

I am actually glad the rest of you do not want an immediate pull out (and hereby apologize to those people for the strawman above - I hope you can understand we at least had to have the vote before Sheehan arrives in Crawford again).

BTW: I never called Murtha a "coward" but he does have some ethics charges that should be looked into.

Oh, thank you, Charlie, for that. Just when I thought you guys had lost all sense of irony.
