Uppity Negroes

Pssst!  Steve Gilliard is black, and went with a bit of an extreme form of mockery to show his displeasure with a black candidate. Apparently that offends Big Gay Sully, who calls Steve a racist, Democratic Coward Tim Kaine, who is running for Virginia governor, and Nasty Big Pointy Teeth Malkin, who never met a race she wouldn't throw into internment camps.

Markos says, "screw them!"  I agree this time, and I might add, "get over it!"  Don't make me take out my lightsabre...

When I first saw Sully's bit, I was on the fence. Now that you have let me know that Steve is black - I am dumbfounded by Sully's boundless hypocrisy. Sort of dumbfounded. Acutally I'm not suprised at all.

Malkin? Oh holy fuck, she slandered Medal of Honor winners. Yeah, she knows racism when she practices it.

It's out of control.

Apparently more than a dozen right wing blogs have linked to Gilliard's bad, bad post, and they're sending their goons to call him names.

And yet they're offended when Al Gore mentions "digital brownshirts."

Steve was quite correct in this, and Mr. Kaine (or more likely one of his campaign flunkies) was wrong.

NEVERTHELESS

He is the Democratic party candidate for Governor of Virginia. Do not be calling him names in public. Do not speak ill of _any_ Democratic candidate for anything, unless, in fact, you wish that candidate to be defeated.
I do not apply this rule to primaries, where our candidates must compete to identify the fittest to run in the general election. But in general elections, Democratic candidates must win, or this country is doomed.

I don't say that lightly, but there it is. If we elect republicans, we will get what we deserve.

"Do not speak ill of any Democratic candidate for anything, unless, in fact, you wish that candidate to be defeated."
Agreed. The Democratic Party cannot withstand introspection or criticism. Stay silent, stay loyal.

Steve's black? Wow... Do his parents know?

Posted by: Mustang Bobby | Oct 28, 2005 7:34:06 AM

John - but I will speak ill of Democrats. They need to be better than this.

MB - I think he finally broke the news to them last week, but they pretty much knew.

Disagree on the trashing of Kaine - as a half-decade resident of Virginia who's been following this gubernatorial campaign, and as someone who was weblogging before Markos and some of his buddies knew the word, I think they totally blew this one - completely over-reacted in an arrogant and egotistical fashion. I'm with kid oakland here.

And Tim Kaine is on the side of the light - not perfect, but as good as I could hope for in Virginia. That Markos "elect Dems at all costs" would go after Kaine for pulling a stupid blog ad while supporting "Democrats" who are opposed to basic human rights is .. well .. it's something, that's for sure. I'm not surprised, but then, as I said to TheGuy when I saw this crap start to come down, "I don't know how many times Markos is going to manage to put himself on my shitlist, but he's just done it again."

"Uppity Negroes", "Big Gay Sullivan" ???

This is why liberalism has become synonymous with hate.

Posted by: mikem | Oct 29, 2005 2:28:39 AM

Medley - I disagree on two levels: one, calling Kaine on his campaign's overreaction is not "trashing" him; two, even if it were, it's not saying "don't vote for him", it's a corrective scolding. I admonished Dean during the primaries when he or his campaign did stupid shit, and I'll do it with regard to any candidate. Nobody is pure, and the whole point of discourse is to express support and displeasure with our representatives.

mikem - You forgot "Democratic Coward" and " Nasty Big Pointy Teeth". You don't do irony, eh, you sheepfucking assmunch?

Posted by: NTodd | Oct 29, 2005 7:59:32 AM

Come on. Nobody said anything about "purity." Markos called Kaine a coward. Armando implied he was a racist. And someone over at the Swing State project said that Kaine was opposed to letting black people express themselves. (W.T.F.?) Kaine was a freakin' civil rights lawyer! And this is who the blog-boy Democratic wanna-be pundits choose to publicly smear?

And this is constructive criticism in a close race with a wingnut in a red state 10 days before the election? Over a BLOG AD? That's not even a major strategy or tactical decision (like Dean's visit to Carter or the orange hat brigade in Iowa). It's piddly nonsense that does no one except the Kilgore campaign any good.

I also disagree that Kaine staff over-reacted. We campaign with the media environment we have, not the one we wish we had.

Moreover, it's not "discourse" for Kos to whine on the front page of his site having only heard Gilliard's side of the story. He was whining about a blogger being dissed - that's all - and not thinking about what was best for the campaign, the residents of Virginia, OR his precious "blogosphere" for that matter.

It's not about the binary question of whether to "criticize" campaigns or not. There's a lot of judgment that can be applied to the issues of when, where, how, and why to criticize campaigns. I think Markos' judgment was severely lacking on all points.

YMMV, but I'm the one who's got to deal with the repercussions of theocratic racists taking over Richmond if Kaine can't manage to pull this off. As far as I'm concerned, the behavior of the boy-bloggers (and that's a special class of bloggers to me that does not mean all bloggers who are boys :) ) worked against the good guys in this instance, and in this case that means it worked against my civil rights. They've got me hoping the online world doesn't have much influence in politics. And they've probably given pause to any number of people about choosing to run blog ads in the future. Is that a good outcome?

Posted by: Medley | Oct 29, 2005 9:48:29 AM

Medley - I know I don't have a dog in this race, and that Markos has a certain arrogant defensiveness when it comes to his "blog progeny", but I still don't see that this is anything more than some people do meaningless, low-level bitching that won't impact the election.

NToDD: Now, now Todd. Mother might see what your doing. Or did she teach you your debating skills?

Posted by: mikem | Oct 30, 2005 9:14:22 PM

Who do you think commenter NTodd's Pa and NTodd's Pa's Wife are, mikey? They taught me to argue logically and civilly. I do, but I also like to rebel. I came up with the satirical stuff and "sheepfucking assmunch" all by myself!
