Sunset, Sunrise

I'd post a picture of today's sunrise now, but I don't know if I can motivate in the next 5 minutes.  WTF am I doing up, anyway?  Stupid birds.

Smoke crack! Smoke crack! Smoke crack!

It's very disconcerting at 5am.

You were really wanting the sunrise to look as beautiful as yesterday's sunset?

Friggin' roosters on Kauai crow 24/7/365.

But I have been awakened in the early a.m. by NYC sparrows in the throes of Spring, so I know from whence you speak.

We get mockingbirds at all hours of day and night. Beats the hell out of car alarms and drunks in the parking lot, though...

Ya, mockingbirds can be a real riot at 3am when they go into their repetoire by the open window.

But then there was the time a mischevious racoon in our tree set off the neighbor's hysterically barking dog (this dog has NO off button), waking us out of deep sleep. My husband heroically dashed into the night in his briefs armed only a plastic spray bottle of cleanser from the bathroom... It took only a few minutes, but all became quiet. My husband came triumphantly back in.

The insulted racoon was gone, and the dog who moments before was contemplating eating our fence was down the hill with a bemused look on its face. Apparently hubby had been quick on the draw, and with a single action had shot the racoon in the butt and the roaring dog straight down the gullet. (Quickly reassuring animal lovers the dog survived with no harm, he just had a lovely forest spring cleansing mouth odor for a night).

I love the sound of mockingbirds in the wee hours. I wonder what sets 'em off, whether their internal clock just got rotated, or there is some evolutionary explanation why they do it.

If I could be awakened by bird song every morning, I wouldn't mind mornings nearly so much. Well, actually, I guess it depends on the bird... as we were discussing over at Bryan's, no peacocks need apply for the job!
