Call Me Hans Giebenrath

Well, I just finished breakfast downstairs and am getting ready to motivate for the busy day ahead.  Going to walk down to 34th street to check out Art Expo New York, specifically to meet Minnesota photog Craig Blacklock.  I'll poke around there a little bit, but since I'm behind on course development and prep work, I'm not going to be able to spend as much time there as I'd like.

I'll blog some when I get back, then my shoulder's back to the proverbial wheel.

[Update: just got back from the expo.  It was a mixed bag: saw a wicked cool HP printer that I desperately want, but really shouldn't buy just yet, and chatted with Craig for about 15 minutes, which was just great; there were only 5 photogs in the entire convention center, and while the other art was quite impressive, I wanted to see more photographs.  I have to say that Craig's work is really awesome in large format.  (Hey, charley, you might just be right about 4x5.)]

NTodd: Pix arrived and look sharp. Note to N Doh Worshippers:Buy big and buy often.Catblogging and Western Civ are at risk!

Secret Message to Fellow Minister N Doh, our plot to take over all of Blogostan has new developments here.

You are one devilish diablo with all those "Are there women bloggers?" comments littered all over Blogostan like so many cigarette butts tossed outside some hipster joint like Warsaw in Williamsburg! Imagine the hell to pay we would have if people were to find out we didn't believe in Women Bloggers? It's a good thing they never will, huh? But enough about you.

Me? I'm having a bit of a Heretikal Identity crisis. I received praise from on high, but because of my own lack of self worth, I don't know what to do.

As Cookie Jill said: Cyber blessings to you, Heretik! You are a Goddess among blogstresses!

Question: do you think I have a career as a Goddess among blogstresses and if not, what should I do?

Bah, some of us are still waiting for your pictures from last night.

precisely, and i am right about 4x5. the best use i've seen for digital is to scan film. it's about the size of the image capture. now if i could afford one of those fancy digital backs for my hassy, well, maybe, but it still wouldn't be silver.

thanx for that link, i've heard of blacklock, some pretty impressive nudes. it's an overdone genre (wonder why) but he seems to making a good go of it. the guy i assist in Miami is from Minnesota, he is also starting to get some attention for his nudes, unfortunately he's afraid to put anything online.

remember, silver is a precious metal, and ink is not stable. in the near future it will all go digital, which is why elton john, who collects photographs says to buy black and white prints, they will increase in value.

Charley, you forgot to say Buy Todd's black and whites.

Heretik - I'm glad they arrived okay, and thanks for the not-so-subtle plugs. Now go write me some testimonials over at my gallery, you mythical woman blogger!

charley - no argument here about 4x5, silver, etc.

I will note that Craig actually scanned his shots and printed them on an Epson (forget which model). Two passes: one skeletal B&W, then after drying a greyscale pass. I see that HP is now saying that their inks will last 82 years. I'm sure we'll improve on that in my lifetime!

Oh, Craig and I talked about the market a bit. His prints are considered pretty expensive in MN, but on the low-end compared to NYC. Finding an appropriate pricepoint seems to be a really interesting trick. My absolute favorite of his nudes (a completely serendipitous shot, BTW) was apparently snapped up for a song (still too rich for my blood right now).

yeah, i agree, his prices are kind of low. but as you point out it's all what the market will bear. i've never sold anything for less than 200 dollars and those were 4x5 contact prints. then again i ain't sold much.

interesting about his prints though, and it sounds easier than traditional printing but you still have to learn a whole new set of skills, and shell out some pretty big bucks for printer, paper, etc...

off to get a scan of my ode to hunter, we'll see.
