Calling All NYC People
I've got a 2-day teaching gig in NYC starting on Tuesday, 3/8. I'm planning on heading down the previous Saturday so I can check out Artexpo New York, which ends that weekend. I specifically want to visit solo both S#89 to meet Craig Blacklock (we received a free VIP pass because Stef bought me his latest book for Xmas).
Anyway, I'll probably be getting in Saturday afternoon, which means I've got the evening to kill, as well as some part of Sunday and all of Monday (but not too late, since I have to teach the next day). Of course I'll be spending some time adding to my New York album, but if any of you folks in the city are available, I'd love to grab a beer or something and meet in person.

PS--I think I'm going to be in Times Square as usual, likely the Hilton or the Doubletree. My grasp of geography is fairly limited to a 20 or so block radius around Bryant Park--Broadway, the library, a few sushi restaurants, the Pig'n'Whistle, Central Park--but I'm happy to broaden my horizons. Prefer to walk than cab or subway it, even in icky weather.

This Excel class is fun and I'm learning a lot of useful things (so if you're reading this, JMM, we're actually paying attention). But when Bob and I get into a classroom situation, it's a bit of a reversion back to high school for us.

Within 20 blocks of 42nd St.? Egad, man, someone's got to get you south of Houston (or below 14th St. at the very least).

Aeolus - uneasy lies the head that wears the royal crown.
Alex - well, to be fair, I have been outside The Zone. It's just that when I'm teaching, I tend to not stray so far. I'm usually either prepping for class and/or exhausted from a day of bouncing around trying to keep people interested in how many bits can fit on the end of a pin, so I tend to stay close to home.
Besides, I know the Pig'n'Whistle has Guinness and excellent shepherd's pie, so why should I go anywhere else for dinner (when I'm not in the mood for cold raw dead fish)?

Personally, I try to avoid going above 23rd St. whenever possible. Good god, man, the options for fine dining outside of the "Realm of Applebee's" that is Times Square is endless!

tige - I'm open to suggestions! I just don't have the lay of the land anymore than you city types would be able to find the good places in our bucolic state.
And I'll note that thus far I've only caught flak for my pedestrian ties to Times Square and ZERO invites to drink beer. This makes me feel very small inside.

Just walked in the door and am punchy, spacey, exhausted, and deeply nourished by Art Larrabee's 2-day clerking workshop--but I do expect to be in the city around March 8. There are lots of cheap, ethnic restaurants on Eighth and Ninth Avenues in the 40s (it's the theater district, after all). But can't help you with the beer. In the words of Marlene Dietrich in "Seven Sinners," "Oh,no, boss. I tried that. And when I try, I try hard." Happy to walk and eat, although preferably as separate activities.

Cool! I'll post again closer to the date and we can hopefully work out details.

We got Afghani, Indian, Mexican, Turkish, Thai, and, of course, Chinese, Japanese, and Italian. Most of them will serve a beer-of-the country. I hear tell there are those newfangled microbreweries around town, but I'm not the guide for that one.

NTodd, I'd love to get together with you that weekend! Should we try for a full-blown NY Blogger get-together, maybe a Saturday evening dinner? I could e-mail Julia and MadKane. E-mail me!!

QuaCarol - who knew New York had such diversity? Got yer e-mail. Responding soonish.
Elayne - will email. Saturday dinner with the gals would be cool. I had no idea there were so many women bloggers... ;-)
