Tsunami Roundup

Remember when Bush announced the US would give FIFTEEN MEELYON DOLLARS (I imagine him doing that Dr. Evil pinky routine) for tsunami relief?  Well, to show how pathetic that is, German racing legend Michael Schumacher has donated TEN MILLION.  Kinda puts our initial stinginess into perspective, doesn't it?

Speaking of perspective, about 4000 Americans are missing in the wake of the disaster.  That number is coming down as people are located, but the number is still staggering.  Given that this could well be worse than 9/11, will Bush start talking about the 26th of December, 2004, in all his speeches to rally the country to spend hundreds of billions on learning about earthquakes and tsunamis and creating warning systems and quick response military units to assist the tens of millions of people who are impacted?

Nah.  Instead I'm sure Bush and his apologists will use this to show just how trivial the death and destruction in Iraq is.  Oops, looks like they already are:

I have been in war...but I have never seen anything like this.

Thanks, Colin, for putting it all into perspective.  We will never forget.

PS--Yes, I appreciate the extent of the devastation and what Powell was saying.  The cynic in me, however, looks at this as just one more meme that can be picked up to justify what we do in Iraq, just like those inane "more people die in traffic accidents..." comparisons.  Bottom-line: just because something or someone is incomprehensibly evil doesn't mean automatically what we are doing is right.

[Update: Kristof puts our short-sighted stinginess into a more enlightening perspective.]

['nother update: dKos commenter rockin in the free world was also a bit disturbed by Powell's comments.]

Bush will also be sure to pass Rush and Pals the Karl Rove meme that we shouldn't really send so much to the victims of the tsunami because that area is a hotbed for Al Qaeda activity.

They have to cover all their bases, you know. All roads lead back to Al Qaeda.

I was just thinking about how people start complaining about other people getting stuff. Who the hell cares that they lost their family, their getting x amount of dollars. Then we will hear about how they are millionaires and how we may have pledged the money, but they don't need it afterall.... I hope I'm wrong.

Jesse - All your base are belong to al Qaeda. Or Bush.

oldwhitelady - I earnestly hope you're wrong too. No offense.

I fear oldwhitelady is very likely right. I can't help thinking the tsunami victims are, from the viewpoint of Ronald Reagan's political descendants, the "welfare queens" of our day: the more things change for the genuine victims, the more Republican attitudes stay the same.

And yes, Bush will surely fail to pay the money promised: it's the neo-American way.

Just like Bush's gahzillion dollar pledge to help fight Aids in Africa. Have they seen any money yet?
And I'd watch the World Bank effort in the tsunami areas..is this a 'get 'em while they're weak' move?

I'm surprised to find I might be less cynical than you guys. I think Bush *has* to come through on this because there is so much attentioni focused on the disaster. AIDS has unfortunately become more of a backburner thing--perhaps it's a matter of "epidemic fatigue" or the fact that in the US we seem to have things more or less under control because we can afford the drug regimen.

I think that's probably why Bush was reluctant to make any big promises. He knew he'd have to back them up this time, and he's pissed away so much money on other things that this will screw up his already insane "plan" to cut the deficit.
