Patience During The Reign Of Witches
So confirmation hearings for Bush's nominee for AG, Alberto "I Love Torture" Gonzales, are under way, and Congress, having counted the Electoral College votes, officially made Dubya our Preznit again despite a Democratic challenge. So I guess we can look forward to four more years of eroding civil rights, exploding debt, wars and all sorts of other fun things at home and abroad.
But just when things seem bleak, Stef sends me these words written by Thomas Jefferson in a letter to John Taylor, on June 4, 1798, just after the passage of the Alien and Sedition Act:
A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt...If the game runs sometimes against us at home, we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake.
Keep the faith.

Hey John, long time no see!
ellroon - it made me feel better (for a while), so I had to share. Would that we had somebody as flawed and thoughtful as TJ in charge.

NTodd,
I come here everyday at least once. I really enjoy your points of view and rarely have anything to add. The pics are definitely worth the stopping by. Good luck on your new endeavor. You'll do good.

Thanks for the reminder that the cycle continues. I, for one, get wrapped up in my own troubles and fail to remember that there is nothing really new. The pendulum swings. I keep trying to encourage myself with the thought that all those who voted for Bush will have to live with it for the next four years too. I at least have the small satisfaction of saying "I told you so."
