Never Again, Always And Forever
Auschwitz was liberated 60 years ago.
I'd just like to remind people who say something like the Final Solution could never happen here that Hitler's regime didn't start with genocide out of the gate. It was an incremental thing, following precisely the maxim laid out in Mein Kampf: A shrewd victor will, if possible, always present his demands to the vanquished in installments.
And so many of us hope to apply lessons that the rise and fall of the Third Reich taught us. When we see the slow erosion of civil liberties at home, preventive war being waged abroad, and foreign nationals tortured in our name, we fear that Americans could be marching down the very same path, convinced of their righteousness just as the Nazis were.
For all the comparisons of our current situation with WWII, I find the most disturbing parallel is that we are, deliberately or unwittingly, playing the part of the bad guys this time. "Never again" doesn't mean we just don't want to ever see evil committed by Germans. It means never again. Period.

" It was an incremental thing". I think this is the quote we need to point to, NTodd. Again, you are right on target.
We, the few, the yellers at the tv, the punchers of keyboards, the thinkers...we have been screaming like Cassandra at the slow continental shift towards fascism, herd mentality, the neocon bullies, the personality worship...all things unAmerican and Nazi-like. No one seems to hear, or even if they do, they do not stop the lockstep march off the cliff.
Never again! We are encouraged to hate gays, muslims, the evil other who will do harm to us good guys.
Never again! We are encouraged to ignore the deaths of innocents in Iraq and Afghanistan because of their peculiar ways and not let their blood disturb our dreams.
Never again! We are encouraged to accept the jailing of the uncharged at Gitmo, torture and disappearances without cause.
Never again! We are encouraged to not question our dear leader, to ignore when he blatantly lies, changes truth in spite of facts.
Never again! We are being prepared to not question invasion into Iran? The draft? Using nuclear weapons?
Has anyone read their history? Does anyone realize what is at stake?
Thanks to you, NTodd, People like you hold one candle up against the darkness, and enables us all to light our own. We will not let this pass.
Never again!
