Brrr!

The cedar waxwings have been cavorting outside my window at the office:

Eat up!  You'll need the energy: it's not going to even get up to 0 today.

Also posted a shot in Intersection.

I love your bird pics. I'm almost jealous that you see such a variety of native bird life. Since my neighbor cleared out an area of relatively dense brush in his back yard, English House Finches ("sparrows") and that other rat-like English import, Starlings, are more dominant than ever in my Arliington, VA back yard. Our bird feeder still is frequented by chickadees, titmice, and cardinals, with the occasional blue jay, but not as often as in earlier years. I think it's been over a year since I last saw a downy woodpecker or a flicker in my back yard.

I love cedar waxwings! They're cool-lookin'.

While visiting my dad in Arizona last weekend, I hung around the hummingbird feeder taking pictures of one particular bird that was either a Costa's Hummingbird or a Costa's-Anna's mix:

I've kind of gotten into birds lately, further proof of my advancing age. My friend Susan actually has a rare bird visiting her yard this winter, which has caused dozens of birders to flock there in hopes of seeing it. (It's a black-throated blue warbler, which is very rarely seen in Oregon and which would normally be wintering in the Antilles right now. Susan has an entertaining account of the whole experience here.)

I'm planning to put up a bird feeder in my backyard just to see what I'll get. I know there are mockingbirds, mourning doves, jays, grackles, and the occasional parrot or parakeet, but I also have stray cats in the area. I'll have to be careful where I put the feeder to make sure I'm not starting a kitty buffet.

Spine ~ Love the hummingbird photos. They appear to be quite different from what we see here in Vermont. Thanks for sharing.

Love the link, Spine, have sent it on.

Thanks for the delightful cedar waxwing shot. We get them (West Coast version) however briefly flying through. They all sit facing the same way in a tree and have the lovely single note call.

But if they are cavorting, they are terrorists!! Gas them all!

Btw, didn't Condi mean consorting? Cavorting is so totally hilarious, brings up mental pictures of Saddam leaping in slow motion through the flowers with a rose in his teeth, Osama romping joyfully in the background.

Unless this is cable, cavoting will result in a possible loss of license and a substantial fine.

cavorting even. Makes me nervous just to type it.

Ca-voting is what we did here in Gropenfurherland. Although I believe Ahnold has been known to cavort with unwilling partners occasionally.
