What Rhymes With 'Vietnam'?

Back in May I wondered about when you declare a quagmire, comparing casualties in Iraq to those we suffered in Vietnam. Slate adjusts casualties for inflation and finds things are just as bad in 2004 as they were in 1966.

I posted about this a while back, but I think a better comparison is not total deaths, since in Vietnam we didn't just face an insurgency, we also faced the army of another country. A more apt comparison than direct body counts would be a comparison of deaths at the hands of just the Vietcong. Such a comparison is probably impossible, but it would be more accurate.
