The Schools! The Schools!
Somehow I don't think this is what BushCo had in mind:
[I]n a sign of the changing times here, the focus is now overwhelmingly on Islamic education. Instead of teaching the alphabet, the goal in Beytool's class is to memorize 28 basic verses from the Koran, and learn how to wash before prayers. The school's director says: "the most important thing for a child to know is religion."
At universities too, religious hard-liners are taking hold — at Baghdad's Mustansiriya, self-appointed morality police now guard the campus gate. They recently sent a grad student away because she was wearing pants.
Just sayin'.

PS--Usual disclaimers: Saddam was bad, religious freedom is good, etc.

What, you liked Saddam? And what do you have against religious freedom?

My religion demands that I put skirts on all men who wear pants. God has spoken. I am buying a truck load of soft pink bunny print flannel.
Are you still in Florida, Hubris?

Oh aye, all me kinfolk used to wear kilts. You ken? How's your religion on haggis, ellroon? :-)

Main Entry: hag·gis
Pronunciation: 'ha-g&s
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English hagese
: a traditionally Scottish dish that consists of the heart, liver, and lungs of a sheep or a calf minced with suet, onions, oatmeal, and seasonings boiled in the stomach of the animal
Uh...God is strangely silent on this.

ellroon,
Yep, I'm here. Treading water.

I seem to recall it needs to be buried for a period of time (like in the ground), but I don't know if that is before or after boiling. And I'm not entirely sure I want to know.

It's actually not that terrible. Although I did turn vegetarian for several years within a few weeks of my last haggis consumption, but honestly, that was purely coincidental!
Of course, I come from Norwegian stock and grew up eating Lutefisk every holiday. I'll take the haggis any day over lye-soaked cod.
