No Sides
Iraq's surprising Olympic soccer run came up short with a 1-0 loss to Italy in a bronze medal game that couldn't escape reminders of violence in the war-torn country.Just before kickoff Friday night, the teams exchanged words of condolence for Italian journalist Enzo Baldoni, who was killed by Iraqi militants seeking to force Italy's troops out of Iraq. Italian players also wore black armbands to honor Baldoni.
I'm sorry Iraq's effort came up a bit short this year, but it was a wonderful run. I hope in 4 years they'll have true freedom and democracy, as well as another chance for gold. Congrats to Italy on their soccer victory, and condolences for Baldoni's family on their dreadful loss. I hope in 4 years we won't have any more unintended victims of this war, and can celebrate games with unadulterated joy.
