The Plot Sickens
WaPo:
For the second day in a row, administration officials said yesterday that more of President Bush's aides knew about an investigation of former Clinton national security adviser Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger than the White House originally acknowledged.
...
Former Clinton press secretary Joe Lockhart, who is serving as a spokesman for Berger during the controversy, said the expanding circle of officials who the White House acknowledges knew of the criminal investigation heightens his suspicion about the timing of the disclosure that Berger is under investigation.
Why is it that the White House never seems to be able to tell a straight story from the beginning?

While I'm sure your question is purely rhetorical, I believe the answer lies somewhere in their natural predisposition towards untruth. Having adopted the Orwellian principle of 2+2=5, they have no choice but to call apples oranges. If they were to be up front from the beginning, it may result in a mistaken utterance of the real story and that would be far worse than their casual wink-and-smirk "you know that I know that you know we're lying" approach.

This has to be the lamest attempt at a distraction I've ever seen. More Abu Ghrab torture info coming to light? Nearly 1000 dead GIs in Iraq? The dirtiest race for the White House ever? Let's try and make yet another Clinton Scandel! Four years after the man and his administration left office.
regardless of the fact that he may have done something shady ( a shady politicician? The Duce, you say!) aren't there just slightly more important things to do right now? Like, maybe ask Condi Rice why she dropped the ball on 9/11? Or demand Dirty Dick Cheney release his Energy Commission records? Something, you know, current?

I made a prediction somewhere else the other day and I'll repeat it here: in a just a few days, the righties aren't going to be so eager to talk about Berger and the archives anymore.
I believe there'll be more stories like this one, and suddenly the leaks will dry up.
