Cult Of Reagan
Word on the street is that the GOP has commissioned a mausoleum for Reagan's body--looks something like this:

Only three days until a Lenin reference - I win the over/under!
I promise to be nicer when (knock on wood) Carter passes away.

I promise to be nicer when (knock on wood) Carter passes away.
Why? I'm not going to be. If I see the same amount of hagiography, myth making and revisionist history when Carter dies, I'll be sure to revive Lenin (heh) again. As Joe Conanson says today, we can (or should be able to) eulogize without beatifying.
What I see right now amounts to a posthumous cult of personality. He was not, for example, "the last great American" as Peggy "Foot Fetish" Noonan has said.

I had forgotten the 15 year old conservative coming of age in a liberal household...

Proof that teenagers should not be allowed to drive. They completely lack the necessary judgement.

Mausoleum? I read in this morning's paper paper [sic] (sorry, no link) that they have revived the movement to carve Reagan's face on a rock. Or a coin. Or a $10 bill. Whatever.
I reject the canonization of presidents, regardless of their political affiliation. We hire them to do a job. Some do a better job than others. Some have more impact than others, whether or not that impact is to the benefit of the nation. I place Reagan in that category: high, long-lasting impact... most of it negative.
<tinfoil_hat> If Bush ever leaves office, </tinfoil_hat> I propose we memorialize him by placing his face on a $1 million bill. Why? Because a $1 million bill, like Bush himself, would be something completely inaccessible to the general public, and something whose worth is certain to decline.
